OUR VISION & MISSION

Our mission is to provide ongoing brain injury advocacy, education and resources. Our vision is to support people living with brain injury to live their lives to the fullest.

HISTORY OF OUR ORGANIZATION

The Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City is the only non-profit in the state of Kansas and the Greater Kansas City metro area solely serving individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries, their family members and the professionals who treat them. BIAKS-GKC supports individuals affected by a brain injury to live their lives to the fullest and  providing ongoing brain injury advocacy, education and resources.

In 1982, Mary Pat Beals, the sister of a survivor of brain injury, founded the Kansas Head Injury Foundation. She saw a need to provide accurate and timely information to families whose loved ones had been affected by a brain injury so she recruited a group of 23 volunteers to help her. With an annual budget of $3,000, the organization incorporated in Kansas that same year, and became the fourth charted state association of the National Head Injury Foundation.

The 1990’s brought changes in terminology and the national organization became the Brain Injury Association of America. BIAKS-GKC followed suit soon after changing its name to the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City.

In the past 20 years, advances in medicine, trauma care and rehabilitation have reduced the number of deaths caused by brain injury, conversely the number of people living with a brain injury has increased. Facing a brain injury is a difficult challenge. The Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City is here to help.  Call 800-444-6443 or 913-754-8883, extension 1, to reach our Program Director.
